You’ve been here before. Standing in front of your closet, dreading the idea of pulling on that pair of jeans from last year.

You know they won’t fit the way they used to, but you squeeze into them anyway. You brace yourself, hold your breath, and suck in. Maybe a loose top will hide the bulge of flesh that is now pouring over the waist band.

But the pinch of the waist band and disappointment in yourself hangs over the rest of your day. You can’t shake the feeling of failure, and before you know it you’re counting calories or making a mental list of foods to avoid, or googling “Ozempic” or “GLP-1 for weight loss” because this feeling is just untenable.

It’s exhausting, isn’t it?

The years of hating your body…dreading looking in the mirror, or putting a bathing suit on, or being naked, or just getting dressed in the morning. Living for years with insecurities about your arm flab… or love handles…or hip dips…or cellulite…or the apron belly from your C-section scar. The endless cycle of self-criticism, frustration, and shame that never seems to let up.

Folks with and without eating disorders struggle with poor body image. In fact, body dissatisfaction is so common — across the gender spectrum — that researchers bleakly refer to it as “normative discontent”.

But there is nothing normal about being at war with your body.
